Chicalyo

In the north of Peru, 763 km from Lima, we find Chiclayo - "The friendship city"! It is home of a great part of Peruvian history. Since immemorial time, it's the point where routes from the coast, the jungle and the highlands come together. It's the capital of the Lambayeque district, where important pre- Incan cultures flourished, such as the Sipán, Mochica and Chimu. There are hundreds of archeological sites in the Valley of Lambayeque. The most important are the Lord of Sipán burial complex and the Valley of the Pyramids in Túcume. Also, the museums hold the rich artifacts of gold, stone and ceramics.

The Lord Of Sipan

Chiclayo, capital of the department of Lambayeque, is a bustling, commercial city, 769 km (480 miles) north of Lima, only a short distance through the sugar cane fields from the famed Moche mausoleum of Sipan.  After its discovery and unearthing in 1987, Sipan's tombs have yielded a wealth of dazzling gold, silver, and copper jewelry dating back to 300 AD.  Ongoing excavations are uncovering even more gold-filled tombs.
Archaeologists led by Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl have uncovered remarkable mud-brick displays and fine pottery, displayed in a small museum.  From Chiclayo you can travel to Trujillo or to Cajamarca.
